Children of Cambodia

"I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess insideā€¦"

- lyrics from popular song by Whitney Houston

The infant mortality rate (IMR) is the number of deaths of infants under one year old per 1,000 live births. This rate is often used as an indicator of the level of health in a country. The infant mortality rate of the world is 49.4 according to the United Nations and 42.09 according to the CIA World Factbook.

On the last update dated 02 April 2009, the infant mortality rate for Cambodia is 72.88 (still higher than what Singapore had in 1950-1955 at 60.69).

Cambodia has a population of 14.7 million of which 32.2% is below 14 years of age. Between 1975-1979, a quarter of the population was killed by the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime and we wonder how many among these were children.

Today the children of Cambodia attend primary school, able to read and write as parents understand the importance of education. Despite the the innocence of the children's smiles, there is still much to do in improving their lives with basic necessities such as clean water, nutritious food, reading and teaching materials, sports equipment, stationery, uniform, shoes and toilets.

Learning Journeys (Cambodia) Foundation welcomes you to join us in bringing cheers and sunshine to the children of Cambodia.
